A clash has broken out between lawyers and police officers in the Red Zone of Pakistan’s federal capital Islamabad. The Lawyers Action Committee has said that if they are not allowed to enter the Red Zone, the Srinagar Highway will be blocked. In some videos, it can be seen that police officers wearing anti-rights kits assigned to the security of the Red Zone near Serena Chowk are preventing lawyers from approaching the Supreme Court. Some lawyers’ organizations have said that they will record their peaceful protest outside the Supreme Court in any case despite the containers and additional security arrangements. It should be noted that a controversial meeting of the Judicial Commission headed by the Chief Justice will be held to appoint eight judges to the Supreme Court, which the current four judges of the Supreme Court had demanded to be postponed until the decision on the petitions related to the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
Senator Ali Zafar, a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan and leader of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, says that the lawyers’ protest over the appointment of eight new judges in the Supreme Court will continue. While talking to the media outside the Supreme Court, he said that we will not leave the field, we will raise our voice. Ali Zafar has raised the issue of seniority in a letter written to the Chief Justice. He says that first resolve it. Another judge is brought to the Supreme Court, which can create resentment among the judges. We stand on the principle that personalities come and go, institutions and principles are most important. He admitted that all lawyers’ organizations are against these transfers, but he said that he will continue to oppose it. It should be noted that a meeting of the Judicial Commission will be held on Monday at 2 pm to appoint eight judges in the Supreme Court.
Some lawyers’ organizations had called for a protest demonstration in the Red Zone of Islamabad against the meeting of the Judicial Commission for the appointment of eight judges in the Supreme Court. These include the Lawyers Action Committee, Islamabad High Court Bar, District Bar and Islamabad Bar Council, after which the lawyers tried to reach the Supreme Court. In view of the protest, the Red Zone of the federal capital has been sealed and strict security arrangements have been made. According to the Metro Bus administration, the Rawalpindi-Islamabad service has been partially closed due to security reasons.
