According to South Korean intelligence, North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russia in the war against Ukraine have been withdrawn from the front since mid-January. According to the intelligence report, North Korean soldiers were deployed on the front in the Kursk region, where the Battle of Gumsan is ongoing between the armies of the two countries. In a post on X, Ukrainian President Zelensky spoke about the active operations of his army on Russian soil, which began exactly six months ago. Zelensky said: “I thank every Ukrainian fighter and every unit involved in the operation in the Kursk region. They have shown the world that despite limited resources, we can fight decisively and effectively.” On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a conversation with the governor of the region that the situation in Kursk is extremely difficult.
Ukraine’s president has said North Korean forces have returned to the front line in Russia’s western Kursk region, following reports that they had recently withdrawn due to heavy casualties. In a video address on Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian military had pulled back North Korean troops who were carrying out new attacks in territory partially occupied by Ukraine, adding that hundreds of Russian and North Korean military personnel had been killed. In January, Western officials said they believed at least 1,000 of the 11,000 troops sent from North Korea had been killed in the past three months.
North Korea and Russia have not commented on the news, but a spokesman said it was likely they had been withdrawn after suffering heavy combat losses. The spokesman added that he was only referring to the areas where their forces were fighting, without giving any details about how long that front line was. Recent reports attributed to South Korean intelligence have said that North Korean soldiers are not prepared for modern warfare and that Ukrainian drone attacks are particularly dangerous for them. Military experts say that if North Korean casualties continue at this pace, it will be unbearable for North Korea. The troops were deployed after Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a security and defense agreement in recent months, deepening bilateral ties.
