The United States has imposed sanctions on several companies from Pakistan, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, including European allies. The United States has imposed export restrictions on 70 companies from eight countries, including Pakistan, China and the United Arab Emirates. The companies affected by the US sanctions include 19 Pakistanis, 42 Chinese and four UAE companies, as well as companies from Iran, France, Africa, Senegal and the United Kingdom. The US government claims that the entities on which sanctions have been imposed are acting against the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States. The recent sanctions on Pakistan are not the first time that they have been imposed. Earlier, in April 2024, the US Biden administration imposed sanctions on three Chinese and one Belarusian company for allegedly developing and supporting Pakistan’s missile program. The Pakistani companies that have come under the US sanctions include Allied Business Concern Private Limited, Ariston Trade Links, Britlite Engineering Company, Global Traders, Indantech International, Intralink. Inc., Linkers Automesh Private Limited, NA Enterprises.
The United States has imposed sanctions on Pakistani companies Otto Manufacturing, Potohar Industrial and Trading Concern, Procmaster, Professional Systems Private Limited, Rachna Supplies Private Limited and Rustic Technologies on charges of supporting Pakistani companies in nuclear and missile programs. The special list of companies and institutions that the United States has included in its sanctions is commonly called the Entity List. This is a list that includes those institutions, companies and individuals that the United States believes are acting against US national security or foreign policy and US interests. It should be noted here that the United States, Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programs In 2018, the United States added seven Pakistani engineering companies to a strict monitoring list that the United States said were allegedly involved in the trade of nuclear equipment. In December 2021, the US administration imposed sanctions on 13 Pakistani companies for allegedly providing assistance to Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programs. In December 2024, Pakistan’s government agency National Defense Complex also faced sanctions from the United States. The United States has justified the recent sanctions on Pakistan by saying that the institutions and companies on which sanctions have been imposed are acting against US national security and foreign policy interests. According to a document released by the US Bureau of Industries and Security, these companies are now prohibited from receiving any technology, equipment or There will be a ban on the purchase of software, said Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan, giving Islamabad’s response to the US sanctions, saying that the sanctions imposed by the US on Pakistani commercial companies are unilateral.
In April 2024, the US also announced sanctions on three Chinese and one Belarusian company for allegedly developing and supporting Pakistan’s missile program. The US government says that they are assisting Pakistan’s ballistic missile program, which is why they have been included in the entity list. Under US law, these companies will now require a license to import any type of technology, equipment or goods from the US, which defense observers are considering as a tactic to maintain continuous US pressure on Pakistan. Limited information is publicly available about the specific profiles and activities of the Pakistani companies on which the US has imposed sanctions. However, the profiles of some companies indicate that they work in industrial and commercial sectors, but after the US sanctions, it can be inferred that the Pakistani companies are connected to the country’s defense sector. After being included in the entity list, the above-mentioned Pakistani companies cannot obtain US-made parts or technology from any third party because this would be a violation of US laws.
The main objective of US sanctions on 19 Pakistani companies in March 2025 is to limit their access to US technology, equipment and the financial system. Could these sanctions affect Pakistan’s defense capabilities? This is an important question. Many advanced defense technologies and items that are specific to defense programs will not be available in international markets, especially from the United States and its allies. Sanctioned Pakistani companies are involved in the supply chain of military hardware. As the United States says, Pakistan will have to rely on other sources to obtain critical components for its defense projects, which are much easier to obtain, as Pakistan did for its nuclear program. Although these sanctions may not immediately weaken Pakistan’s defense capabilities, they may create long-term challenges that will require strategic adjustments. A negative aspect of the US sanctions may also be that Western countries, under US pressure, may refrain from providing Pakistan with military hardware and technology such as avionics, missile guidance systems, and other communication equipment. Another and more important negative aspect may be that countries that are buying or are interested in buying Pakistani defense products may be hesitant.
The US sanctions will not only strain bilateral relations but could also have a negative impact on the extensive system of intelligence sharing between the two countries since 2001, which would be a huge loss for US policy in the region, provided that Pakistan is prepared to enhance the prestige of a sovereign country. Moreover, the US will have to lose an easily accessible launching pad in the region, which will not be able to fulfill the so-called US counter-terrorism ambitions. There is a great need to make the Trump administration aware of these facts, and for this, Pakistan’s diplomatic and military establishment will have to take coordinated steps. The US administration will also have to be convinced that Pakistan will find alternative ways to increase its defense capability, but if Pakistan cancels the agreements to provide only operational and logistical support to the US, the US government will be brought to its knees. It is time for Pakistan to respond firmly to these unilateral US sanctions. Pakistan has protected US defense interests since its inception. But America has repeatedly betrayed Pakistan. Pakistan’s rulers must also understand that if Pakistan ignores America at this time, the scope of American sanctions will extend to the country’s nuclear program. Pakistan should keep in mind the example of Yemen, which is a much smaller country than Pakistan, but this country has shown manliness and is responding to American attacks. Pakistan is a nuclear country that can not only wipe out Tel Aviv but can also pose a threat to American interests in the region.
