In the UK, 23-year-old former soldier Daniel Abid Khalif was sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison for spying for Iran. A British court convicted 23-year-old Daniel Khalif of spying for Iran, terrorism and escaping from prison 3 months ago, although Daniel claimed in court that he did all this in an attempt to work as a double agent to help British security agencies. It should be noted that Daniel had escaped from prison in September 2023 by hiding in a food delivery truck, disguised as a cook, who was re-arrested by the police after a 3-day search. Despite being part of the British army, Daniel was accused of providing important and sensitive information to Iranian intelligence officers via Facebook.
According to the UK Crown Prosecution Service, Daniel Abid Khalif sent messages to an Iranian-linked middleman on Facebook and assured him of his loyalty. Daniel indirectly assured the Iranian intelligence agency that he would continue to provide British military intelligence to Iranian intelligence for more than 25 years. The prosecution told the court that Daniel had escaped from prison in September by posing as a chef and using a food truck. After a three-man search, the police were able to arrest this dangerous Iranian agent. Daniel established contacts on Facebook with the Iranian intelligence agency and some figures who have been designated as terrorists by the UK.
The prosecution further said that in addition to the fake documents, Daniyal also sent some real military documents to the middleman, which included the personal details of the Special Forces soldiers. They further said that Daniyal Abid had received 1,500 pounds from the Iranian man for this work. On the other hand, Daniyal Abid Khalif said that he is the son of an Iranian mother and a Lebanese father who grew up in the UK and considers himself a patriotic Englishman.
Daniel further said that he had sent some military documents just to gain the trust of the Iranian agent and that all the other documents he sent were fictitious. The former soldier said that he wished that in this way he could gain the trust of the Iranian person and identify the Iranian spies in the British army. However, the court rejected these arguments, calling Daniel’s actions self-incrimination and London’s Woolwich Crown Court sentenced him. Justice Cheema Garb sentenced Daniel to six years in prison for espionage and terrorism, and two years for escaping from prison.
