The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, will demand the issuance of arrest warrants against senior leaders of the Afghan Taliban movement for their alleged atrocities against women in Afghanistan. According to Khan, this is a crime against humanity. According to Karim Khan, the leaders against whom he wants to issue arrest warrants include the supreme leader of the Taliban movement, Haibatullah Akhundzada, and the head of the Supreme Court, Abdul Hakim Haqqani. On the other hand, the Afghan Foreign Ministry says that the demand for arrest warrants against the leaders of the Taliban movement by the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is politically motivated and is based on a policy of "go with the flow”. The Chief Prosecutor has such logical reasons on the basis of which it can be believed that the two are criminally responsible for crimes against humanity in the form of gender-based violence. Karim Khan clarified that we can say that the current situation for women and girls in Afghanistan is unacceptable. In a statement issued by the Afghan Foreign Ministry on the social media platform X, it was said that Like many other decisions of the International Criminal Court, this decision lacks a fair legal basis and is a case of double standards.
It should be noted that after the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, they adopted a cynical attitude towards women similar to their previous era. In the previous era (1996-2001), the Taliban deprived women of almost all rights, but soon the Taliban authorities began to impose strict restrictions that the United Nations viewed as gender-based segregation. The judges of the International Criminal Court will have to consider Karim Khan’s request before deciding to issue an arrest warrant, and this could take weeks or months. Afghan Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Nabi Omari, who was a prisoner in Guantanamo Bay prison, said that the ICC cannot intimidate us. He said while addressing a ceremony in the eastern city of Khost that if these were fair and truthful courts, they should have brought the United States to justice because it is America that started the wars, the conflicts in the world are created by America.
