Iran’s foreign minister suggested that Iran is ready to start talks with the United States to lift sanctions, but negotiations cannot progress in a positive direction without President Donald Trump‘s policy of maximum pressure. Abbas Araqchi, while describing the US sanctions on Iran as cruel, said that the Trump administration wants to stop Iran’s economic development, which causes hardship for the people. According to Iranian state media, Abbas Araqchi said that negotiations are needed to lift sanctions, but Iran rejects the policy of maximum pressure. Negotiations cannot be held from a weak position. These negotiations will not take place, but surrender will have to be made, and Trump should know that Iran will not surrender. We will never go to the negotiating table like this.
On February 5, President Donald Trump signed a memorandum in which the United States has imposed certain sanctions against Iran, implementing a policy of maximum pressure that he first imposed during his first term in office, including economic sanctions that have caused suffering to the Iranian people. The memorandum states that the policy aims to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero. The US president’s previous campaign had reduced Iran’s oil exports from about 3 million barrels per day in 2017 to about 400,000 in 2019, and after the cancellation of the 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers during the Obama era, which eased UN sanctions on Iran to curb its nuclear program, the Trump administration unilaterally canceled it.
It should be noted that Abbas Araqchi’s statement came at a time when Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei has urged the Iranian government not to negotiate with the United States under a policy of maximum pressure. Abbas Araqchi said that negotiations should be conducted with caution, adding that Tehran has never left the negotiating table. Trump demanded a verified nuclear peace agreement with Tehran and said that work on a new agreement should begin immediately. Iran has repeatedly said that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only and denies that it is trying to build nuclear weapons.
