The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Araqchi, has reiterated his readiness to participate in indirect negotiations with the United States on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program, warning that American threats are complicating the current situation. The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready for real negotiations from a position of equality and indirectly, as in the past. Abbas Araqchi, speaking in a phone call with his Dutch counterpart Casper Veldkamp on Wednesday, said that a constructive environment is needed for negotiations on the nuclear issue. The approach based on threats and blackmail will distance us from any positive decision. The Iranian Foreign Minister described the threats made by the US authorities as unacceptable, adding that this is a violation of the UN Charter and international law and is continuously complicating the situation. Araqchi warned that Iran will respond swiftly and decisively to any aggression against its territorial integrity, sovereignty and national interests. Iran’s top diplomat also stressed that all UN member states They have a responsibility to uphold the rule of law internationally. They criticized the European Union for failing to take a stand against the provocative rhetoric of US officials, which they said was a threat to international peace and security. For his part, Veldkamp stressed the need for diplomacy to resolve disputes and expressed his concern over the rising tensions in the region. US President Donald Trump threatened over the weekend that he could order military strikes against Iran if Tehran refused to enter into negotiations to reach a new agreement on its nuclear program.
During his first term, Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and launched a maximum pressure campaign against Tehran. Trump reinstated the policy after returning to the White House for a second term in January, but has since signaled a willingness to replace the 2015 agreement with a new deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. On March 12, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s leadership asking for talks to reach a new deal and threatening military action if Tehran refused. Iran has rejected direct talks with the United States under pressure and threats, but says indirect talks are an option.
