The Spanish National and Catalan Police and the Italian Police have arrested 11 people allegedly belonging to the Tehreek-e-Labbaik in a joint operation, accused of providing financial support for extremist acts, encouraging people to commit extremist acts and identifying potential targets. According to a statement issued by the Spanish Interior Ministry on March 7, the operation was carried out last Monday (March 3) in the Spanish city of Barcelona and the Italian city of Piacenza. As a result of the operation, ten people were arrested in Barcelona and one in Piacenza. According to the Interior Ministry, the latest operation is part of an ongoing investigation by the Spanish National Police, in which 30 people allegedly belonging to the Tehreek-e-Labbaik, a militant Pakistani organization based in Spain, have been arrested over the past three years.
Previously, Spanish police arrested five people in 2022 and 14 in 2023. The statement said that the investigation revealed the presence of a highly organized group in Spain and Italy that had issued instructions through secret messaging channels that encouraged the killing and beheading of people who went against the group’s ideology. The Interior Department said that the group had also praised extremists in its publications who had attacked alleged blasphemers in Europe and Pakistan. The investigation revealed that some of the suspects under investigation had already begun to identify potential targets in Europe.
They say that during the investigation, the presence of instant messaging groups through which the ideology of this organization was being spread has been revealed. One of these groups was run by one of the detainees, which consists entirely of women, where not only prejudice was promoted but also potential targets for future attacks were identified. Investigators have claimed that the detainees are allegedly affiliated with a militant organization, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, for whose financial support members of the organization regularly donated. The Interior Department says that out of the 10 detainees, four suspects have been sent to jail while investigations are ongoing against the others.
