US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser Elon Musk has supported the US withdrawal from NATO, saying on his social media platform X that it makes no sense for the US to pay for Europe’s defense. Despite verbal statements against NATO and the European Union by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday that the bloc still sees the US as an ally. US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser was responding to a post on X on Sunday morning, which stressed that the US should withdraw from NATO now. Tesla’s billionaire CEO said that we really should do this.
Musk’s statement comes at a time when the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which will celebrate its 76th anniversary in April, is in jeopardy. Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on the European Union, and his alignment with Russia on the Ukraine issue has deeply troubled European officials. The American leader has also raised questions about US security commitments to Europe under the umbrella of NATO. Ursula von der Leyen was asked at a news conference whether she saw a need to reframe Brussels’ approach to Washington. To which she said the answer was not clear. She said yes, there are differences, but if you look at our common interests, they always outweigh our differences. We have to resolve them.
Speaking in general terms, Ursula von der Leyen said that everything in the world today has become a transaction. She said that there was a growing sense of urgency within the 27-nation European Union because something fundamental has changed. Our European values, democracy, freedom, the rule of law are at risk. When asked specifically about the future of NATO countries’ relations with the United States, Ursula von der said that although the alliance relationship is intact, it does not mean that we had the last pattern. 25 to 30 years is still right. She said that the changing tone of US relations is a very strong wake-up call and now is the time for Europe to step up to defend itself and give itself the position we need. The head of the European Union said that the European Union has already given a clear signal that it is moving in this direction. At the European Union summit on Thursday, it was agreed to raise about 800 billion euros to increase defense spending, which Washington has long been pushing, they said, that we are allies, but that means that all allies must shoulder their responsibilities.
